Last year R. Kelly was found guilty of racketeering in his federal sex trafficking case, and now his sentencing for the case is quickly approaching. Prosecutors have filed documents suggesting the time they recommend he serve behind bars for the crime.
According to TMZ, prosecutors have filed documents recommending the amount of time he should be sentenced, and they are saying that she should get more than 25 years in prison. They believe his actions are more than enough to have him locked up “in excess of 25 years.”
In the documents, prosecutors made mention of his relationship with the late songstress Aaliyah, claiming that he “began to sexually abuse her when she was just 12 or 13 years old.” They also mentioned the other inappropriate acts that he has been accused of throughout the years including the “physical and psychological” abuse of women.
The Associated Press further detailed that prosecutors wrote in the filings that the troubled singer used his “fame, money and popularity” to “prey upon children and young women for his own sexual gratification.”
They added,
“He continued his crimes and avoided punishment for them for almost 30 years and must now be held to account.”
R. Kelly’s attorneys argued in return that he should be given the maximum of at least 17 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.
Many of the women that have accused R. Kelly throughout the years were also a part of the Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly,” which was released back in 2019. Kelly was later arrested that same year, and he has been in jail since. Some of his accusers featured in the series also testified against him in court last year before he was officially found guilty.
R. Kelly is scheduled to be sentenced on June 29th.
