Third Suspect Indicted in Murder of Young Dolph

According to reports, a third suspect has been indicted in the Young Dolph shooting which claimed the life of the Memphis native last year.

Hernandez Govan, 43, was indicted by a grand jury Thursday. He was indicted for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Govan becomes the third person to be indicted on murder charges just shy of the year from the day of the fatal shooting.

“Mr. Govan has been indicted and is in custody for being involved in the Young Dolph murder. He played the role of the person who solicited the murder,” said Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy. “What we are alleging in our indictment is that he asked for the murder to take place,” he said.

Young Dolph Murder Suspect Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison for Prior Federal Violation

One of the suspects charged in the fatal shooting of Young Dolph has been sentenced to prison for violating a previous charge.

ActionNews5 reports Justin Johnson aka Straight Drop, a 23-year-old suspect in the murder of the Memphis rapper, was sentenced on Tuesday to two years for violating terms of his supervised released relating to a past weapons charge.

Johnson pleaded guilty to violations that include “not being regularly employed, missing mandatory drug screenings and therapy, failing to seek permission before leaving the jurisdiction and being arrested.”

The news arrives less than a month after Johnson was attacked by a fellow inmate at Tennessee’s Shelby County Jail in March. According to TMZ, Johnson was punched in the face while on the phone in the jail’s visitation area. Lawyer Juni Ganguli said his client was not seriously injured, and there was no stated motive for the assault.

Back in January, Johnson was arrested along with Cornelius Smith, 32, in connection with Dolph’s murder last November. Johnson faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, employment of a firearm and theft of property over $10,000.

As previously reported, Dolph’s autopsy results revealed the late rapper suffered 22 gunshot wounds, as he was shot in the chest, abdomen, chin, neck, shoulder, both arms, and multiple times in the back.

Caretaker of Young Dolph’s Memorial Site Was Shot and Killed

Friends and family of Jeremiah Taylor were shocked to hear that he was shot and killed last week. Taylor was known around Memphis as one of the main caretakers of Young Dolph‘s memorial outside of Makeda’s Cookies, and a local ABC affiliate had just interviewed him about his dedication to the memorial back in January, which you can view above.

During the interview with ABC 24, Taylor, an army veteran, revealed that he grew up in the same neighborhood as Dolph, and he added that he had met him several times. Taylor added that Dolph’s death hit him hard, and he decided to step up as a caretaker for Dolph’s memorial to make a positive impact on his community.

Not much information has been released surrounding Taylor’s death, aside from him being shot and crashing into a pole. Frank Gottie, who helped Taylor with upkeep of Dolph’s memorial, spoke to local outlets about Taylor, stating, “Jeremiah was a great person and he was so on point. He was helpful he would try to help anybody.”

CBS affiliate WREG reports law enforcement has issued an arrest warrant for Shondale Barnett, 28, who was arrested on Jan. 11 alongside another suspect, Justin Johnson. Barnett was supposed to be extradited back to Memphis, but was actually released from custody on Jan. 21. Cornelius Smith, another suspect in the murder of Dolph, is in custody.

Barnett is now wanted by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, who claim they have no idea where he is. Clay County Sheriff Paul Harden addressed the situation in a press conference on Thursday.

“On Jan. 11, Mr. Shundale Barnett was brought to the Clay County Jail by the Indiana State Police from an arrest on I-70. He was booked in the Clay County Jail on an outstanding warrant from Shelby County, Tennessee,” Harden explained.

“We contacted Shelby County and held him on their warrant,” he continued. “And we were contacted on Jan. 21 and they told us that they were no longer wanting to come and pick up Mr. Barnett and that we were to release him at that time.”

When asked at Thursday’s press conference to clarify why Barnett was released, Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich steered away from giving a definitive answer.

“I can’t, because it’s a pending case,” Weirich said. “It is a pending investigation, it is a pending prosecution, and we can’t get into that at this time. When we can, we will answer all those questions that I know the public has.”

In January, Barnett was charged with being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. He also faces charges of criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder and theft of property.
